Fav albums of 2011

Took me a while to post this. It was not hard to choose these. Each one left a lasting impression and continues to get frequent listens. No order. They’re mostly pretty different.

KBD, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Lee Noble’s offerings had me transfixed with the beauty of their creation. It sucked me into contemplation (or, with Horrorism, deep sadness) over and over.

A$AP Rocky is the only rapper to make it on here, even though I listen to a fair amount of rap. Some of the producers on there (notably Clams Casino) are to blame for this. And A$AP has an infectiously cool fake southern accent and his style and appropriately-scaled braggadocio are quite charming.

Indignant Senility and Niggas with Guitars I can’t pinpoint why I had to listen to their albums over and over and over. ‘Consecration’ created a dense space of paranoia and ethereality that I just couldn’t escape from. It is a haunting. It would not let me sleep and kept me up all night drinking and pondering dark thoughts. ‘Ethnic Frenzy’ is an artful dark drone album with weird intimations of blacksploitation.

Ash Borer and Ruin Lust are different, but from the same scene. The level of raw human ferocity on these recordings is phenomenal.

Bermuda Drain gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. Fernow’s theatrical delivery and the diversity of these songs is still beyond my comprehension.

Kurdaitcha is a great bedroom black metal record. The songs are kind of cheery and devastating at the same time. The ambient tracks lag and bring the album down, but the rest of it I absolutely love the songs and the overall sound.

Run DMT is the surprise on here. It’s kind of indescribable, but it listens like a teenager’s journal during initial discovery of psychedelics. Some great drones, catchy psychedelia, and an overall comic/cosmic feel that is truly adorable.
